The Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program
How is the MSC program structured?
The MSC program embodies the three components of self-compassion as defined by Kristin Neff (Neff, 2003b): mindfulness, common humanity, and self-kindness.
All of these components are essential to be able to make a lasting change in your life – by paying attention to your body and being aware of your emotions (mindfulness); by recognizing that you are not alone in your experience and that painful emotions are part of being human (common humanity); and by learning to care for yourself and show kindness rather than harshness (self-kindness).
As you learn to apply these components, you will be able to change your relationship with difficult emotions, shifting your perspective of pain from something to avoid to something to embrace. The awareness and acceptance of painful emotions allow us to see pain as an unavoidable part of the human experience, and we can then give ourselves kindness simply because we are human.
h
You will also more easily recognize the difference between how we treat those we care about compared to how we usually treat ourselves, and that in order to care for others we first need to learn to care for ourselves (in other words, we need to put our oxygen mask first!).
